Looking for the 12th class English notes of chapter 1? Here we have published the 2nd Year English Chapter 1 Notes The Dying Sun - 12th class.

Exercise of Textbook

Q.1: How is it that a star seldom finds another star near it? (2012)
Ans: A star seldom finds another star near it because the stars travel through a universe so immense that it is a very rare event for one star to come near to another star There is an average distance of well over a million miles between one star and its  nearest neighbour.

Q.2: What happened when, according to Sir James Jeans, a wandering star wandering through space, came near the sun? (2010)
Ans: According to Sir James Jeans, when a wandering came near the sun, its tidal pool must have raised very high tides on the surface of the sun

Q.3: What happened when the wandering star came nearer and nearer?
Ans: An immense tidal wave must have traveled over the surface of the sun when the star came nearer and nearer and at last forming a mountain so high that we can hardly imagine
Q.4: What are planets and how did they come into existence? (2011)
Ans: Planets are the heavenly bodies that revolve around the sun. They came into Existence as a result of a rare event when a wandering star came near the sun The tidal pull of this star formed a mountain of molten matter on the solar surface When the wandering star moved away, the mountain of molten matter was tom to pieces which fell into space. These pieces are called planets, of which our earth is one.

Q.5: Why is there no life on the stars?(2008)
Ans: The stars are the collection of fires scattered through space. They are far too hot for the life to exist because life needs suitable physical conditions for its existence which are not present on the stars.
Q.6: Write a note on the beginning of life on the earth. / How did life come into
being on earth? (2010)
Ans: According to Sir James Jeans, the planets cooled down gradually. And in the course of time, our earth might have given birth to life. Life started in simple
organisms, whose living power consisted chiefly in their ability to reproduce
themselves before dying. From these organisms, started a stream of life that ended in the form of human beings

Q.7: Why is the universe, of which our earth is a part, so frightening? Give as many reasons as you can. (2009)
Ans: The universe is so frightening because of its immense distances, great stretches of time, our littleness and loneliness in space and the impossibility of the
existence of life like our own at anywhere else.
Q.8: What, in your opinion. should be the conditions necessary, for the kind of life we know to exist on other heavenly bodies? Do such conditions generally exist?
Ans: Life needs suitable physical conditions for its existence. The most important of which is the temperature at which substances can exist in a liquid state. Such conditions generally do not exist on other heavenly bodies

Extensive Questions

Q.1: How can we understand the Immensity of the universe?
Ans: We can understand the immensity of the universe by the fact that there is
uncountable number of stars in it. Most of them are so huge that millions of earths could be packed inside each and leave room to spare.
Q.2: How many stars are known which are hardly bigger than the earth?
Ans: Only a few stars are known which are hardly bigger than the earth. But,most of them are so large that hundreds of thousands of earths could be packed inside each and leave room to spare

Q.3: How do we find stars In the universe?
Ans: We find stars moving here and there in the universe. A few for groups which journey in company but most of them travel alone

Q.4: What is the probable number of the stars in the universe
Ans: The probable number of the stars in the universe is something like the total number of grains of sand on all the sea-shores of the world

Q.5: When did the rare event of a star coming near to the sun take place?
Ans: Some two thousand million years ago, this rare event took place that a star
wandering blindly through space, happened to come near the sun

Q.6: What is meant by the cause of disturbance
Ans: The wandering star that came near the sun and raised tides on its surface has been called the cause of disturbance"

Q.7: What happened when the wandering star began to move away (2010)
Ans:  When the wandering star began to move away, its tidal pull tore the mountain of the molten matter to pieces that were thrown off into space.

Q.8: Why is there life on the earth only? / Is human life confined to earth only, if
so, why? (2014) or Why is life not possible on other planets?
Ans:Life is possible on the earth only because life needs certain suitable physical
conditions for its existence which are not present on other planets. The other
planets are either so cold that all life would freeze or they are so hot that life
would be burnt up there.

Q.9 Define a temperature belt? (2013)
Ans: A temperature belt is a narrow area surrounding each star at a suitable distance where the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold for life to exist on il All such temperature belts added together make up less than a thousand million
millionth part of the whole of the space.

Q.10 What is the roughly calculated area over which life is possible?
Ans: A rough calculation shows that all such temperature belts, within which life is possible, all added together, make up less than a thousand million millionth part of the whole of space.

Q.11 Why does not life seem to have any part in the plan of the universe? (2013)
Ans: Life does not seem to have any part in the plan of the universe because the
universe is very vast and the temperature belts, where life can exist, make up a
very small area of the whole of the universe.

Q.12: How many stars have a planet going round them. where life is possible?
Ans: Probably one star in 100.000 has a planet going round it at the right distance for life to be possible on it.
